What we're learning this week...

Our reading focus is point of view.  We will be learning how and why authors write from different points of view, i.e., 1st person, 3rd person.

Grammar will highlight singular and plural verbs as well as verb tenses; past, present, and future.

The kids will be finishing up their personal narratives by editing, publishing, and illustrating their small moment stories.

Our first unit in math is wrapping up this week and children will be taking their post assessments.  It is hard, but they can do it!!

Make sure to talk to your children about what they've talked about and discussed at school.  If they can explain it accurately to you, it will help them further understand.

Watch for upcoming pictures of students working in the classroom.  They are excited to see themselves on the website!

Schedule change...

After 4 weeks of reflecting time I've decided to change our ELA instruction to the mornings.  We now have math at 1:00 daily.  Our daily schedule was posted in the PowerPoint Open House presentation and I wanted to make everyone aware of the change.  So far, it's going great!

Our planners have arrived!

The kids have been PATIENTLY waiting for their homework planners to arrive during the last 3 weeks.  Mr. Ken made our day when he delivered them during our morning meeting on Friday!  The children each received ONE planner.  This is their ONLY planner that they will receive this year.  If it gets lost, there is not enough of them to replace it.  I have told the kids to guard them with their lives! Don't be surprised if they're a little overprotective of them.  : )

Each day the children will write the homework that is due for the next day in their planner.  No more excuses that they forgot and parents will be able to see the daily assignments.  There is a space on the right hand side of the week for children to write their spelling words.  They will do this first thing Monday mornings when they check in.  I will continue to post the weekly spelling list on the website as well.

The planners will serve as a tool for responsibility, time management, and a sense of "I"m getting older now".  The kids are very EXCITED about receiving them.....they seem to be excited about EVERYTHING!

New Additions!

I have added the weekly spelling list to the sidebar.  I will also add an upcoming test reminder section to the sidebar.  Just remember, tests are not the only thing that I evaluate your child by.  I have a lot of informal assessments like in class projects, workboard assignments, shelf work, notebooks, work behaviors, reading fluency checks, running records, and my anecdotal notes.  The district grading rubric for tests will be a helpful guide when looking at your child's report card.  We have done our best to align our grading rubric with the NYS test grading rubric.  Please don't stress too much about tests!  They are not the only measure.

The kids and I have talked about what they want to see on the blog.  Some suggestions were pictures and links to animal studies, history sites and articles, Presidents, the Solar System, a student of the week, and pictures of the kids working in class.  I think that they are ALL GREAT IDEAS!  I really want the kids to utilize and visit the blog as much as they can.  After all....it IS theirs!  I have picture and media releases from everyone for district websites.  Since this is a class website and not a district site, I'd like to get additional permission and input from the parents and guardians.  I will not post any pictures or information about your child unless I get your permission.

They are all SO EXCITED about this website!  It will be a great resource for both the parents and the kids.
